What thermography measures

Clinical thermography records patterns of heat emitted from the body’s surface. The procedure is non-contact and uses no ionising radiation. Images are reviewed for thermal patterns that may help inform whether further clinical investigation should be considered.

Breast thermography

For new breast thermography clients, an initial study and a three-month follow-up are used to establish an individual baseline. Once established, annual comparison studies may be considered.

Important limitation: thermography is investigational and is not a standalone diagnostic test. It does not replace NHS breast screening, mammography, ultrasound, MRI, medical examination or biopsy. New breast symptoms—including a lump, nipple or skin change, or bloody discharge—need prompt medical assessment.

Preparation affects the quality of thermal images. You will receive a preparation guide and relevant health questionnaire before your appointment.

What a thermal image looks like

Thermal images use colour to represent relative patterns of surface temperature. The colours themselves do not provide a diagnosis; images are interpreted in context and may indicate whether further assessment should be considered.
