What is arterial stiffness?
Large arteries normally expand and recoil as the heart pumps. Arterial stiffness describes a reduction in that elasticity. It is different from atherosclerosis, which involves plaque building up within artery walls, although the two can coexist.
Arterial stiffness tends to increase with age and is associated with cardiovascular risk factors. A measurement can provide additional information, but it does not diagnose cardiovascular disease or replace a medical cardiovascular assessment.
What does the BP+ measure?
The Uscom BP+ uses a familiar upper-arm cuff to record brachial blood pressure and estimate central blood-pressure and pulse-wave parameters. These include measures related to arterial stiffness and augmentation index.
The appointment is non-invasive and the recording itself is completed quickly. Elizabeth will explain the reported measurements and whether medical follow-up should be considered.
An unusual result needs interpretation in the context of your health and may require discussion with your NHS or private GP. Chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting or possible stroke symptoms require urgent medical help.
